How to replace an oil filter? A practical guide.

Engine Oil Filter

Regularly replacing the oil filter is a fundamental maintenance task to ensure the long-term stable operation of the engine. Many car owners think that "replacing the filter" is a very professional task, but in fact, the process is not complicated. With the correct steps, it can be easily done by the average car owner.

Why is it necessary to replace the oil filter?

As engine oil circulates within the engine, it continuously carries away metal shavings, carbon deposits, and other impurities.

The function of the oil filter is to trap these impurities.

If the oil filter is not replaced regularly, the following problems may occur:

Poor oil circulation and reduced lubrication effectiveness

Impurities re-entering the engine, accelerating wear and tear

Increased engine noise and higher fuel consumption

In severe cases, it can even lead to engine failure

This is why professional mechanics recommend that the oil filter must be replaced every time the engine oil is changed.

What do you need to prepare before changing the oil filter?

Before you begin, it's recommended to have the following items ready:

• An oil filter compatible with your vehicle model

• New engine oil that meets the manufacturer's specifications

• An oil filter wrench (cup-type or strap-type)

• A wrench or socket (for the drain plug)

• An oil drain pan, rags, and gloves

If this is your first time performing this task, it's crucial to confirm the correct filter model beforehand, as thread sizes and heights vary between different vehicle models.

Detailed Steps for Replacing the Engine Oil Filter:

1. Slightly warm up the engine.

Start the engine for 3-5 minutes.

The purpose is to make the old engine oil more fluid, allowing for more thorough drainage. However, it is not recommended to let the engine run for too long to avoid burns.

2. Drain the old engine oil.

Park the vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

Place an oil drain pan under the engine oil pan, unscrew the drain plug, and let the old engine oil drain out naturally.

This usually takes 5-10 minutes until the oil has mostly stopped dripping.

3. Removing the old oil filter

Use an oil filter wrench to unscrew the old filter counterclockwise.

A small amount of oil will leak out during removal; this is normal.

Key inspection point:

Confirm that the old filter's rubber seal is removed along with the filter. If the seal is stuck to the engine, be sure to clean it thoroughly.

4. Installing the new oil filter

Apply a thin layer of new engine oil to the rubber seal of the new oil filter.

Then tighten it clockwise by hand. Once the seal contacts the engine base, tighten it another 3/4 turn.

It is not recommended to use a wrench to overtighten, as this may cause oil leaks or make it difficult to remove the filter next time.

5. Add new engine oil and check

After tightening the drain plug, add new engine oil through the oil filler opening.

It is recommended to add 90% of the standard oil volume first, start the engine and let it run for 30-60 seconds, then turn off the engine and check the oil level using the dipstick, adding more oil as needed.

Finally, check for any oil leaks around the oil filter and drain plug.

How often should the oil filter be replaced?

Generally, you can refer to the following intervals:

• Mineral engine oil: approximately every 5,000 kilometers

• Semi-synthetic engine oil: approximately every 7,500 kilometers

• Fully synthetic engine oil: 10,000–15,000 kilometers

Regardless of the type of engine oil used, the oil filter should be replaced at the same time. Replacing only the engine oil without replacing the filter will not truly provide effective maintenance.

Common Mistakes for Beginners:

In practical operation, the following problems are very common:

• Forgetting to replace the oil filter

• Failing to clean the old sealing ring, resulting in double sealing

• Overtightening the oil filter

• Adding too much engine oil

• Neglecting to replace the drain plug gasket

These small details are often the main reasons for oil leaks and rework later on.

Replacing the oil filter yourself isn't just about saving money, but also about having a clearer understanding of your vehicle's true condition.

As long as the steps are correct and the materials are appropriate, this is a safe and practical basic maintenance skill.
