A Practical Guide to Fuel Filters
Function
• Filter impurities (iron filings, sand, water) in fuel to protect the injector and engine.
• Improve combustion efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and extend engine life.
Types
1. External filter: installed in the middle of the oil pipe, easy to replace.
2. Internal filter: integrated in the fuel tank or fuel pump, requires professional tools to replace.
3. High-performance filter (such as carbon fiber): finer filtration, suitable for direct injection engines.
When to change?
• Regular change: every 30,000-50,000 km (refer to the maintenance manual).
• Early change:
o Weak acceleration, difficult starting
o Poor quality oil or water in the fuel tank
DIY replacement steps (external type)
1. Safety preparation: turn off the engine, unplug the negative terminal of the battery, and release the oil pressure (start the engine several times before turning it off).
2. Remove the old filter:
o Use a wrench to loosen the oil pipe buckle and catch the leaked fuel.
o Pay attention to the installation direction of the filter (marked with an arrow).
3. Install the new filter:
o Install it in the correct direction and ensure that the oil pipe is tightly plugged in and does not leak oil.
4.Check: Start the engine, observe whether there is oil leakage, and confirm that it is running normally.
Notes
• Do not use inferior filters: poor filtration may damage the injectors.
• Aging of fuel pipes: Fuel pipes of old vehicles are prone to cracking, so be careful when disassembling and assembling.
• Diesel vehicles: Some vehicles have drain valves, so drain the water regularly.
Summary
Regularly changing the fuel filter can save fuel and protect the engine. It is low cost but has a great effect. If your car is not driving well, check it first!
